Double Double Toil and Trouble

In the spirit of the Season,
a scene from  William Shakespeare's (1564-1616)"Macbeth, beginning of Act IV, Scene 1 as found in:
  • Shakespeare, William. The Globe Illustrated Shakespeare: The Complete Works Annotated. Howard Staunton ed. New York: Gramercy Books, 1993.

  • _______________________IMAGINE_________________________________

    A dark Cave, In the middle, a Caldron boiling. Thunder.
                    Enter the  Witches.

       Thrice the brinded cat hath mew'd.
       Thrice and once, the hedge-pig whin'd.
       Harpier cries:—'tis time! 'tis time!
       Round about the caldron go;

       In the poison'd entrails throw.—
       Toad, that under cold stone,
       Days and nights has thirty-one;
       Swelter'd venom sleeping got,
       Boil thou first i' the charmed pot!

       Double, double toil and trouble;
       Fire burn, and caldron bubble.

       Fillet of a fenny snake,
       In the caldron boil and bake;
       Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
       Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
       Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting,
       Lizard's leg, and owlet's wing,—
       For a charm of powerful trouble,
       Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

       Double, double toil and trouble;
       Fire burn, and caldron bubble.

       Scale of dragon; tooth of wolf;
       Witches' mummy; maw and gulf
       Of the ravin'd salt-sea shark;
       Root of hemlock digg'd i the dark;
       Liver of blaspheming Jew;
       Gall of goat, and slips of yew
       Sliver'd in the moon's eclipse;
       Nose of Turk, and Tartar's lips;
       Finger of birth-strangled babe
       Ditch-deliver'd by a drab,—
       Make the gruel thick and slab:
       Add thereto a tiger's chaudron,
       For the ingrediants of our caldron.

       Double, double toil and trouble;
       Fire burn, and caldron bubble.

       Cool it with a baboon's blood,
       Then the charm is firm and good

    Horror movies and the Legends...Fear them or love them?

        I am a sucker for horror flicks. I have loved them for as long as I can remember.  My all time favorite being the classics like the 1954 "Creature from the Black Lagoon" and the 1941 "The Wolfman". Even without today's special effects and gore I find myself entranced by it. Turn out the lights, give me a bowl of popcorn and a blanket and it's all good.
        With every good scary movie there is a creature of darkness that causes the heart to pound and the least little sudden movement or noise will cause you to shriek. What are the legends behind these mysterious creatures? Let's examine just a few.

       Vampires, even the name causes panic in some. They are the fictional creatures of the night or are they? Do they really exist?  Let's examine what we know from legends. From Ancient Persia and stories of Lilith, a Deity known as Queen of the Demons to Romania and Count Vlad Tepes Dracul, Prince of Wallachia whom it is said slayed and impaled his conquests for pleasure, these stories of the elusive vampire have been been around for centuries. Bram Stoker gave life to the modern day vampire by using Vlad Tepes as the basis for his fictional novel, "Dracula". Many films of "Dracula" exist.  Of today's versions one of my favorite is the 1992 classic "Dracula" with Gary Oldman playing the iconic Count. Hollywood has capitalized and transformed these creatures of the night into a seductive, tantalizing phantoms of which can either create panic or intrigue depending on one's willingness to use their imagination.
       There are over 600 movies about vampires. Myself I prefer the movies that stick to the older legend as in the 1931 movie "Dracula" where  Bela Lugosi portrayed the vampire most eloquently. It still causes shivers even without the special effects and color technology of today as does the 1922 silent film "Nosferatu".But what of today's films? From the "Underworld series" where there is a struggle between vampire and werewolves to "Twilight" where a vampire's skin glitters in the sun rather than burst into the flames, there are many variations of this illusive creature to dwell within the imaginations, but in each there is a common theme. There is struggle between good and evil. Even among mystical beings there is a struggle between light and darkness. You cannot have one without the other.How can you see the dark without a light? It is up to you to find the balance between the two.
        Still the question, do the vampires of legend really exist in today's society? There is a community of those who believe they are members of the vampire race.A elite group with the ability to draw energy from other humans. Now I do not believe that they are the "vampires" that bite and attack humans but they live a lifestyle that doesn't conform to what is considered "normal" in today's world, but I do not believe that in itself makes them all "evil". Just because someone is different it doesn't make them wrong or "evil". Within every race there are individuals that one can define as "evil" but it is not fair to judge everyone by the actions of a few.If you look at each race individually you will find that someone somewhere at sometime has created an absolute evil act. How unfair it would be to categorize everyone based on an individuals act.  Each of us are responsible for ourselves and our own lives.

       On to another Legend, Werewolves...how did that legend begin. Whenever something occurs that is beyond reason a legend is born, Lycanthrophy...the ability to transform oneself into a wolf-like creature. This stems from from people who have a rare genetic disease called hypertrichosi. This is disease causes a growth of fur all over especially on the face, resulting in a wolf-like appearance.These people have been ostracized for their appearance many unable to work due to their different look, Many became carnival sideshow attractions due societies glares and non-acceptance.
        My theory is you shouldn't judge someone solely based on appearance or what you may have heard. Really explore and keep an open mind when it comes to opinions of one another. Don't be critical of those who are different simply because of their differences. remember one day you will be judged as in the same manner as you yourself judge others.
      When you actually begin to explore the legends and their origins they may not be as frightening but they remain just as intriguing.  Me, I will continue to enjoy the "fright" and let my imagination roam free as my light shines.

    There is Magic afoot..☆*......

      Today we have a  world is filled with technology and most things taught are based in facts, things that can be proven. A world where we are supposed to believe in only those things that can be scientifically or technologically proven. So what about the magical realm? Is it real? Does magic really exist? A thought to ponder...hmmm. My choice is to believe in all possibilities. Faith teaches me to believe in things I cannot see or touch . With this in mind, Magic gives flight to the imagination and possibilities of things we cannot see without a little faith..
       There was such an uproar when Harry Potter first emerged.  "They were tainting the minds of the youth by introducing them to a school where magic was taught. It is evil!" How ridiculous is that. Was it any different than the Wizard of Oz, ? I mean really a house is swooped up by a twister and "magically" transported to a world of numerous witches,a wizard, a talking scarecrow who needed a brain, a tin man who needed a heart and a lion that was afraid of his own shadow. Ultimately it was a storyline about good and evil and being true to yourself. It was about learning to think for yourself, to have compassion and to not be afraid, to have courage.  Sound familiar, sounds alot like Harry to me. What about the weekly series we all watched as kids with our parents like "I Dream of Jeanie", Bewitched" or the "Twilight Zone" were they sinister as well?
        My Take on Harry is basically this.  He is a struggling youth put in an impossible living environment that makes a choice to pursue his dreams and accentuate what he has rather that what he doesn't have. He is constantly boarded with choices that ultimately showcase right/wrong, good vs evil.  All kids face tough choices as they grow from adolesence through their teen-age years. Ultimately it will be them that have to make these descisions between right and wrong.
        Since the beginning of time there has been a struggle between good and evil. It is important to teach children about choices and that there are consequences to every choice we make. For every action there will be a reaction.
       I choose to believe and to teach my children and grandchildren the power of the imagination. What are the legends behind the myths...Faeries & Leprechauns, these are only a small portion of the magical realm of imagination.
        First lets look closer into this realm. Close your eyes , open your imagination and see.......
    In The Faery Realm, there are many creatures including faeries, gnomes, brownies, sprites, and the mischievous leprechauns. Hollywood has given life to many of the legends of the magical realm. Let's examine just a few. One of my favorite movies is "The Magical Legend of Leprechauns". It is an enchanting tale that includes a faery princess that falls in love with a leprechaun and this causes mayhem in the magical world which in turn affects the human realm as they co-exist.  The feuding between these very different creatures causes a shift in natures balance and they must learn together how to accept each other's differences and with the help of humans restore the balance to mother nature. Hmmm seems like a pretty important lesson to learn.
       Let's see another, "Labyrinth".  This a story about a young girl who is enthralled with the fantasy world but disillusioned with her real life. Mainly with her new family including a step mother and new baby brother.  She is resentful of the new addition and even calls to the "Goblin King " to take him away. However when he does she quickly realizes how much her little brother means to her. She must work her way through the Labyrinth to the Kings castle in order to save her brother. All through the maze as things go wrong she continually says"It's not fair!" Then she realizes sometimes things are not fair in life but you persevere and go on. When she realizes the only power the Goblin King has over her is the power she gives him.  It is her choices that she is responsible for and her choices can also effect those around her.  It is then she is able to bring her brother home all before her parents realize that he had been missing. Another good lesson...Life isn't always fair..but how we handle the trials in life is what affects the quality of the life we live.
       With the growing age of technolocial advances and the "improved quality of life" we are rapidly losing the our ability to imagine and to dream. What has happened to make-believe? The tooth faery, Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny  and Halloween ( a whole new topic coming soon) are all becoming casualties of "growing up"  and being "realistic". I for one choose to remain a child at heart and will continue to inspire children as well as adults that while structure , education & discipline are essentail in today's world it is ok to endulge in their imaginative nature as well.
       Next topic....Vampires and Werewolves..were do they fit?....

    Autism & Vaccines ..Is there a Link

        There has been much debate and media hype regarding a connection....wait there is no connection. As a nurse I immediately sided with the Medical community. Then why the twinge when my grandson recieved his 12 month vaccinations and why did I become physically ill when he had a violent seizure shortly after them? Why was my first thought &%&^ vaccines!  That thought was quickly disspelled by medical experts, an ear infection and a febrile seizure.  Still that quirky feeling in the pit of my stomach...
       Over the next few months changes occured.  Developmental delays, he stopped trying to walk, didn't seem interested in learning new words, he preferred to play with wheels on his cars. The light was fading, becoming dimmer and dimmer until there was no eye contact at all and no spoken words. Hey  what happened to mama, dada, nana, bye bye ,pop and cc? And what was the deal with his digestion? His GI systems seemingly shut down. On one of his numerous ER visits we had his abdomen xrayed  because we thought he had eaten a plastic toy. Everything seemed to go into his mouth. But we were shocked by the results.  He was impacted from his colon to the lower portion of his stomach. He couldn't process dairy and wheat products so the waste had become like stone. After a month of mineral oil twice daily, diet change (gluten/casein/lactose free) lots of crying at the extremely difficult passage. His stomach seemed better but the light was still gone. It wasn't until I dropped a pan on the kitchen floor that caused everyone in the house to jump or squeal yet he never flinched. I looked at his papi with tears in my eyes picked up the pan and a wooden spoon and walked up behind him and hit the pot with the spoon.  Still no reaction he just kept spinning the wheels on his truck. I dropped the pot  scouped him up and held on tightly and  cried, "Something is wrong". While"Autism" echoed in my head other thoughts also popped in.  Maybe he is deaf from the numerous ear infection since infancy.  My tears didn't seem to have any effect on him.  He just kept spinning the wheels. He was interested in any type of social contact at all.  When placed in a social envirorment his solution was to run away. Even at parties that most kids enjoy were a nightmare for him.  Too much noise, too many faces, to much expectation. He was slipping further away.
        His mom and I talked.  No parent wants to acknowledge that there child may have a problem but we agreed somethng isn't right. We immediately started pushing.  His pediatrician didn't seemed concerned "he's too young right now, let's wait until he is 2- 3 years old, Well, screw that, so we found a pediatrician that would listen to our concerns. After she evaluated him she referred us to the Dan Marino Center in Miami.Thus began our journey.
        They were very patient, understanding and compassionate. A barrage of testing began, speech, occupational, physical and psychological testing.  The full gammet began. Lastly the 24 hour EEG monitoring. As they hooked him to the monitor with all those wires he looked even more tiny.  Behind in his growth he didn't even make the growth charts to graph his development.  He was 18 months in 6-9 months clothes. After the EEG they took his to the OR for anesthesia to conduct a specialzed hearing test to rule out a hearing deficiet because he had no vocal abilty and seemingly wouldn't acknowledge even your existence in his world.  During the procedure panic again as he crashed from a reaction to the anesthesia that caused his blood pressure to plumment. Finally mom and dad were able to bring him home.  Home to his mommy, daddy, sister, nana and papi. Now we wait...and wait... and wait...seeming endlessly for the results.
        Shortly after his second birthday the results were in....The EEG showed numerous  incidents of seizure activity, his hearing test was normal, his psychological testing revealed no emotional connection or differentation. meaning family had the same connection as a stranger.  He was in his own world.
    Final diagnosis PDD-NOS. Pervasive Developmental Disorder- one of the many spectrums identified in Autisic Spectrum Disorder, the "label" they give when there is "no specific reason for the disorder".  We were devastated, forced to see a conclussion that I had felt in my soul from the moment the seizure occurred.  Now the therapies begin, Speech, Occupational, Pyschological. What do we do now?  What families do best!  Rally the troops, prepare for battle, Support each other  and we win!
        I started making calls.  I had a friend in the school early education department that I called and said  Help!
        He referred me to another colleague who was a speech pathologist. His office said they weren't taking new patients.  I wasn't leaving it at that . I emailed him directly, explained my situation and he called me. After we spoke his office called to tell me the appointment time. We were in the door. Once there I realized he had set up not only his speech but the other therapies as well. We weren't going to have to travel to Miami he would see him at the office in our town. We all cried. The power of family, faith and friends!  God Bless this wonderful man! He loved his family and the children he cared for in his work. He was an undeniable Godsend in my grandson's journey back to us. Sadly he passed away from cancer but I was able to tell him of the remarkable progress my grandson had made because he made an exception and took him in as a patient.
        With the progress made we were able to enrolled him in the Early Intervention program at school. The intense therapies at an early age I believe made the difference in his recovery.
     A major milestone for me was hearing those 4 little words I thought he would never say.."I love you Nana".  Wow, the tears again, this for joy. It hasn't been easy, rather it has been a long hard road but well worth the challeges. He has excelled socially & intellectually. He accomplished all his goals ahead of schedule and was able to complete his pre-k classes in a regular private pre-school and will start kindergarten in the fall in a regular classroom. He still faces challenges ahead but he has in a sense  come full circle. He has now become quite the social bug, he initates conversation, plays with others and voices his opinion strongly.  Is he cured?...hmm  cured no... but on the right track, definately! Where darkness once swooped in, the light is now shining brightly with only glimpses of an illness that could have taken him forever.
        Now to the crux of the matter, vaccines did they really cause this disease to "take hold"?  But the scientific and medical community all agree there is no physical "proof"  of any connection.  there is that word again "proof". I have to wonder if any of those working on the "proof"  have actually had a child with autism or seen through the eyes of a  parent of an autistic child?
       I absolutely agree that vaccines are necessary, but do no we really need to give so many at one time? How cannot that bombard the immune system? For most their immune system is strong enough to weather the bombardment and come out stronger but what about those with weaker systems?  What happens to them? Are they the statistics that occur that they tell you about when they give the vaccinations? The paper they make you read and sign before they give the child the vaccine? A small percentage of those that have reactions? When you are one of those "statistics/percentages your perspective changes. Could an overload cause the brain to wall itself off from the bombardment of germs?  I am not saying with any medical certainity that this what occurs but what if?
       Why not spread out the vaccinations instead of so many at one time?  What could it hurt? There is great resistance in this proposition. When my granddaughter started kindergarten she need a full range of required vaccinations. We started taking her 6 moths prior to school so that they could be given seperately. Every visit it was the same.."why don't we give her everything today?, When you say no they respond by saying to you "there is no evidence that vaccines are related to Autism" and each time my repsonse, "Because I choose to have her vaccinated one at a time!" Although there is no "proof"  I see no reason to take a chance just in case the research is wrong. You see evidence of this daily with the commercial from"Law firms" urging lawsuits over medications that were FDA approved that now they have found caused potential serious health risks.  By reducing the number of vaccines given at a single vist it seeming would give the child's immune to rebound before the next vaccine given what is the harm in that?
        With other treatment and medications the dosage is calculate to age, weight , & height, and with chemotherapy the person's immune system is also taken into consideration. I believe we owe it to our children to really think about what and how much we put into their systems at one one.
       As I look back at the whole picture:
     Before- a typical little boy with sheephish smiles and giggles just beginning to talk.
     After- emptiness, vacant eyes , no words no expressions of love either giving or accepting.
     Now - typical little boy that likes to pick at his sister, but loves her dearly. Often now says "I love you Mommy, I love you Nana" to the moon and back as he smiles from ear to ear.
        As I stated earlier, He starts kindergarden this year in a regular classroom. Wow! what an accomplishment for him. The future still holds challeges but now we only see glimpses of an illness that could have hearly stolen him from us forever.

    Nana...are faeries real?

        There are many stories that cause one to ponder Myths, Legends  & Folklore, do you believe?
    Leprechauns, Troupin Faeries, Ghosts,Vampires, Werewolves & Witches, they trigger our imagination and make us wonder...are they real?
        To believe in these mythical creatures we must believe in something we cannot see. In todays society the notion that you can believe in something that you can't see is almost obsolete so when my 7 year old granddaughter asked me, "Nana, are faeries real? I haven't seen one", (her friend had told her faeries weren't real because you can't see them). I thought for a moment before answering.
     "Baby,just because you can't see something doesn't mean it isn't real. I believe in faeries . Different people have different beliefs".
    She smiled a big beautiful smile and replied, "Then I believe too Nana". She has complete faith in me as do all children have faith in the one's who love and care for them. They trust and beleive that the grownups in their lives will always have their best interest in mind.
        This simple conversation really helped me understand a little more clearly how our general population is being taught early on to not believe in things that we cannot see right in front of us.  There must be undeniable physical proof or it doesn't exist or didn't happen. Most of us have talked to their children about Santa Claus and the tooth faery until they reach a "certain age" then the myth is disspelled as something only little kids believe in.
        Case in point, the high profile case involving the death of a child. I watched the media coverage of the trial and while I did not expect the murder 1 or even 2 conviction I did expect her to be convicted of manslaughter. I was completely shocked when she was declared not guilty of that charged as well.  I couldn't understand. Reasonings..."no proof of who, where, why". How could the jury not see that even if it was not murder it was neglect that resulted in the death of a child? As a mother I cannot understand how another mother could "block out the death of a child as if they didn't exist" even if a trauma occured in thier childhood. I can't fault the jury for their decision. They had to be nervous being selected on such a high profile case involving a young mother accused of murdering her child in such as callous way. The seed of doubt was planted when the defense came out with their opening statement including alleged sexual abuse within the home. Whew they must have thought, a reason. It is much easier to vilify a middle aged man than to beleive that a mother, a seemingly loving mother could commit such a henious crime against her own child. Then given a 26 page document detailing how they needed to arrive at their decision, that they must have absolute proof of guilt beyond any reasonable doubt or they must return a not guilty verdict. Thus here we are... in disbelief...she was released. But what was she released to? A world that hates her? Media that relentlessly pursues her?  Her "celebrity" status may be her ultimate imprisonment. No peace, no friends and isolation from family. Karma has a way of coming back threefold. The lightening strike at the remains site on the day of the verdict and then the lightening strike at the county jail on the eve of this mom's release....interesting..I choose to believe that this is "proof" that it will handled by a higher power.
        The death of this little girl has brought awareness to the thousands that are killed or injured each year due to neglect or abuse. Now there is going to be a law that will make it a felony to not report a death within 1 hour and you must report a child missing with 24 hrs.  I thought   YEAH!  something positive came out of this tragedy.  Then realization and sadness set in.  How sad that our society has "evolved" to the point that it requires a written law to make it a crime to not report a child who is missing or to not report a death.
         Isn't is amazing how a child's innocent question can invoke such profound thoughts. I as well as my daughter will continue to fuel my grandchildren's imagination with stories of leprechauns and faeries so they can learn to believe in things they cannot see thus strengthening their faith to know a higher power exists that in the end there will be a reckoning.

    Welcome to my little corner of the Cyberworld..

    Hi y'all,
      What is in a mirror? What we see is an outward reflection of ourselves and others. The outside shell is seemingly so important but does it truly reflect who we are?
       The world sees who we want them to see. To see the person behind the image portrayed you have to look beyond the image, in essence go Beyond the Mirror.....

      Who am I behind the reflection?  hmmmm  interesting question.
     I am a multitude of facets all rolled into one, Wife, Mother, Nana, Daughter, Sister, Friend, Nurse. Although I have lived my first 50 years in Florida when I speak most ask "Are you from Tennessee?". I never really thought I had an accent until the invention of the video recorder. Wow was that a revelation.lol.
    Seriously though being raised with Southern Values and traditions is definitely a plus.
    You are taught to 4 "F's" at an early age. Family.... Faith... Friends... Food. All very important values.
       Family is a first and foremost devotion , We may fight amongst ourselves but dare you not to harm one of our own lest your find yourself embattled with a clan that rallies together to defend each other no matter what.
       Faith...many things to different people. For us...Faith is key.  To know that a higher power has your back is of great comfort. Me personally, I know with certainty that the Otherworld exists. I don't feel the need to elaborate or justify. Each of us must find our way to our own conclusion on religious views.
       Friends...friends can give us perspective and support. Most southerners consider most to be their friends. But a selective few become true friends.
       Food... ahhh that southern food. "We love to eat"  that is not just a statement but a way of life. If it is fried or has gravy..it 's gonna  be good!  I must say"patting myself on the back"  I am a great cook!
       Now for the basics of who I am. My name? Teresa is my given name and used mostly at work, my friends and family call me by a variety of nicknames, Teri, Te'A, TeriLyn.
     Hey,  I am who I am and I choose to embrace life and to celebrate each moment for we never know when it could be the last.
      Strange as it may sound during a "Rock star's" interview he made a statement that resonates true. Don't fight a battle you can't win.  Aging is inevitable so why try fight it. Embrace it, enjoy it..live it!
      Now some brief history. Even a strict upbringing couldn't tame my adventurous streak. I found my "soul mate" at age 15. I was 17 when we married. There were those who were skeptical but 33 years later we are stronger than ever. We were blessed with two beautiful daughters, only one is still with us. We have grown up together, had our ups and downs and survived the worst tragedy that parents can, the death of a child. Each day we become stronger.
      Our beautiful daughter has blessed us with 2 beautiful grandchildren, a granddaughter and a grandson. Family, its all about family..
